According to the CDC, mpox (monkeypox) is a rare disease caused by infection with the mpox (monkeypox) virus. Mpox (monkeypox) virus is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Mpox (monkeypox) symptoms are like smallpox symptoms, but milder, and mpox (monkeypox) is rarely fatal. Mpox (monkeypox) is not related to chickenpox.
According to the CDC, mpox (monkeypox) symptoms include a rash that can be on or near the genitals or anus. It can also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth. The mpox (monkeypox) rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.
Other mpox (monkeypox) symptoms can include:
- fever
- chills
- swollen lymph nodes
- exhaustion
- muscle aches
- backaches
- headache
