“The old me is back, and I feel like I’m getting a lot more out of life.”
I started drinking in college to make friends and fit in. I wasn’t too worried, even though I occasionally blacked out. After graduation, my friends and I still liked to go out on weekends. I didn’t think I had a problem because I was still holding down a job. However, I started going out during the week, and I began showing up late for work.
I wasn’t sleeping well, and I stopped a lot of hobbies like going to the gym or seeing my family. I realized my drinking was getting in the way of my life, and I was worried for my health. During a routine physical, my doctor asked me questions about how much I drank and suggested I speak with someone.
I had been trying to quit on my own, but it wasn’t working. My counselor helped me talk through the reasons behind my drinking and the benefits that cutting down would have for my life. They also gave me tools for managing my urges.
I was sleeping better, showing up to work on time, and doing the activities I used to love. I realized I was saving a lot of money and was able to start planning the vacation I’ve always wanted to take. My friends and family have noticed the old me is back, and I feel like I’m getting a lot more out of life.
